Skipton
A market town often called the Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, with a high street market that has run continuously since at least 1204. The market days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) bring stalls along the broad cobbled main street. Skipton Castle, at the top of the high street, is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in England, originally built in 1090 and held as a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes through town, with 45-minute canal boat trips available. Skipton makes an excellent base for exploring the Dales.
