Dover
The town is dominated by the famous White Cliffs and Dover Castle, one of the largest castles in England. It has origins in Saxon times with significant medieval expansion under Henry II. The castle complex includes the Great Tower, medieval tunnels, and the Secret Wartime Tunnels used during the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940. The White Cliffs themselves can be walked along the National Trust path. Dover town is quite pleasant, with shops, cafes and a small history museum. The principal English port for cross-Channel ferries to France, still busy with freight, although most travelers use the Chunnel.
