Eyam

A small stone village in the Peak District National Park, 12 miles southwest of Sheffield. Eyam is famous for the extraordinary self-quarantine of 1665 to 1666, when villagers voluntarily isolated themselves to prevent the plague reaching surrounding communities. About a third of the population died in the 14-month quarantine. Today the village preserves this history at Eyam Museum, the parish church of St Lawrence, plague cottages marked with plaques, the Boundary Stone, and Mompesson's Well outside the village. Eyam pairs naturally with broader Peak District visits including Bakewell and Chatsworth House.
