Grasmere

A small village in the heart of the Lake District, made famous by William Wordsworth, who lived here from 1799 to 1808 at Dove Cottage. Both Dove Cottage and Wordsworth's later home Rydal Mount nearby are open as museums. The poet, his wife, and his sister Dorothy are buried in the churchyard of St Oswald's Church. The village center has stone cottages, traditional pubs, and the famous Grasmere Gingerbread shop, baking the spicy biscuits since 1854. Surrounded by some of the Lake District's finest fell-walking country, with paths leading up Helm Crag, Easedale Tarn, and onto the Coffin Route to Rydal.
