Harrogate
A spa town that flourished in the Victorian era when its sulfur springs attracted visitors from across Europe. Today Harrogate is known for its elegant Victorian and Edwardian architecture, manicured parks (notably the Stray, a 200-acre common encircling the town center), and famous afternoon tea at Bettys Tea Rooms — a Yorkshire institution since 1919. The Royal Pump Room Museum tells the spa heritage story. Harrogate hosts annual flower shows at the Great Yorkshire Showground. The town makes a comfortable base for visiting Knaresborough, Fountains Abbey, Ripon Cathedral, and the Yorkshire Dales.
