Castleton

A small village at the head of the Hope Valley in the Peak District, dramatically positioned beneath the ruins of Peveril Castle, built in 1086 and the inspiration for Walter Scott's novel Peveril of the Peak. Castleton's main attraction beyond the castle is the four show caves nearby — Peak Cavern (also known as the Devil's Arse), Speedwell Cavern (entered by underground boat), Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern, the latter two famous for the rare Blue John mineral mined locally. The village also sits at the trailhead for walks up Mam Tor (the Shivering Mountain) and along the Great Ridge.
