Keswick

The largest market town in the northern Lake District, set between Derwentwater and the dramatic peak of Skiddaw. The pedestrianized center has a Tuesday and Saturday market, the Moot Hall (a 19th-century clock tower marking the market square), and a wide range of outdoor gear shops, cafes and restaurants. Keswick Museum and the Pencil Museum (celebrating the local graphite-mining heritage) are quirky attractions. The Theatre by the Lake hosts year-round performances. Keswick is a popular base for walking and climbing, with Catbells, Skiddaw, Helvellyn and Cat Bells all within reach. Boat services circle Derwentwater from the lakeside landing stages.
