Knaresborough
A historic market town on the River Nidd, four miles east of Harrogate. The town is dramatically situated on a cliff above the river, with the ruins of Knaresborough Castle (a 12th-century Norman fortress destroyed in the English Civil War) commanding the heights. Below, the river is spanned by a Victorian railway viaduct that has become an iconic photograph. Mother Shipton's Cave on the riverbank is one of England's oldest tourist attractions, open since 1630, named for a 16th-century prophetess. The town center has a market square, traditional pubs, and the timbered Old Court House.
