Ely

A small cathedral city in the Fens of East Anglia, dominated by Ely Cathedral, one of England's most magnificent medieval churches. Begun in 1083, the cathedral is famous for its unique Octagon Tower (built after the original tower collapsed in 1322) and its long, low silhouette visible across the flat fenland for many miles, earning it the nickname "Ship of the Fens." Other attractions include Oliver Cromwell's House (the Lord Protector lived in Ely from 1636 to 1647), the Stained Glass Museum, and the riverside walk along the Great Ouse. This quaint market town is an easy day trip from Cambridge by train.
