Ambleside
A lively market town at the head of Lake Windermere in the Lake District National Park, popular as a base for walking, climbing and water activities. The compact center has stone-built shops, outdoor gear retailers, cafes and pubs. Notable landmarks include Bridge House, a tiny 17th-century building straddling Stock Beck, and the medieval Stock Ghyll Force waterfall a short walk from the center. Ambleside makes a good launching point for fells like Loughrigg and Wansfell, and for boat trips down Windermere to Bowness. There are some small, ancient Roman ruins next to towns.
