Lower Slaughter
Lower Slaughter is a small village in Gloucestershire, often cited as one of the prettiest in the Cotswolds. The River Eye runs through the center of the village, crossed by low stone footbridges and lined with honey-colored limestone cottages that have stood largely unchanged for several centuries. The village's name has nothing to do with violence — it derives from the Old English term for a wet or muddy place. The 19th-century Old Mill, with its working waterwheel, anchors the village and now houses a museum and tea room. A gentle riverside walk connects Lower Slaughter to its sister village Upper Slaughter, less than a mile away.
