Namur

Namur is the picturesque capital city of Wallonia, nestled in the heart of the Meuse Valley. Namur is known for its charming architecture, and stunning natural beauty, situated on a promontory between the Meuse and Sambre rivers, with a rich history dating back to the Roman era.

To explore Namur, you must take your time. Its rich heritage, the charm of its little streets, its terraces and its restaurants are there to be savoured. From the heights of the Citadelle to the banks of the Sambre, the capital of Wallonia offers a wealth of sights and experiences. Walking in Namur is a stroll through alleyways full of charm, taking time to stop in front of a shop or in a small restaurant.

Citadelle

One of the most popular tourist attractions is the Citadelle, which dominates the cityscape from its hilltop perch. First built during the Roman era and expanded over the centuries, the Citadel offers panoramic views of Namur and the surrounding landscape. Take a leisurely stroll along the ramparts, explore the underground passages, and immerse yourself in the intriguing military history of the region.

Climb aboard the Namur cable car to take advantage of its unique 360-degree panoramic view over the town and its Citadel. There are 6 cabins available to take you from the historic heart of town to the citadel and its splendors in just 4 minutes.

From the Citadel, make your way to the charming old town, located on the banks of the Meuse River, where narrow cobbled streets and quaint buildings evoke a sense of medieval charm. The Old Town is a charming medieval quarter with narrow streets, old buildings, and a number of shops, restaurants, and cafes. Place d'Armes, the main square, is a bustling hub with its lively cafes, restaurants, and the Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall), a beautiful Renaissance-style building. Nearby, you'll find the Église Saint-Loup, a stunning Gothic cathedral known for its intricate stained glass windows and impressive architecture.

Then explore the vibrant riverside district of Jambes. Located on the southern bank of the Meuse River, Jambes offers a delightful blend of nature and urbanity. Take a relaxing walk along the river promenade, enjoy the scenic views, and perhaps indulge in a delicious Belgian waffle or a refreshing local beer at one of the waterside cafes.

Musée Félicien Rops

For a taste of Namur's cultural heritage, visit the Félicien Rops Museum, dedicated to the works of the renowned Belgian artist Félicien Rops. The museum houses an extensive collection of his provovcative and often controversial artwork: paintings, drawings, and sculptures which offer a unique perspective on 19th-century art and provide insight into the artist's complex personality.

Guided Rickshaw Tours

Hop aboard a Rickshaw or ‘Pousse-Pousse’ from the local Tourist Office for a truly original visit. Three guided tours are available. The rickshaw drivers are great tour guides, telling you stories and anecdotes throughout the tour. It’s unusual but really fun way to discover the town

Nature

Nature enthusiasts will find solace in the breathtaking beauty of the Ardennes region which surrounds Namur. Nearby, you can explore the scenic landscapes of the Meuse Valley, dotted with picturesque villages, dense forests, and meandering rivers. The region offers excellent opportunities for hiking, cycling, and outdoor activities, allowing you to connect with nature and unwind in a tranquil setting.

Gastronomy

Don't forget to savor some of Namur's culinary delights. The city is famous for numerous restaurants and brasseries offering traditional Belgian cuisine. Indulge in mouthwatering dishes like moules-frites (mussels and fries), carbonnade flamande (beef stew), and decadent Belgian chocolates.

Did you know, French fries were born in Namur. Yes, this city on the banks of the Meuse was, in the eighteenth century, fond of fried fry, a small fish that the Namurois liked to eat. Unfortunately, during a very harsh winter, the river froze and fishing became impossible. The Namurois decided to cut pieces of potato in the shape of fish and fry them. Shrewd people, the Namurois!

Namur, with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, is a gem waiting to be discovered. Whether you're a history buff, art enthusiast, or nature lover, this captivating city has something to offer everyone. So, pack your virtual bags and get ready for a memorable journey through the enchanting streets of Namur!
