Lier is a hidden Belgian gem, a small historic town known for its beautiful medieval architecture, especially the Grote Markt main square. Located in the heart of Flanders mid-way between Antwerp and Mechelen, 20 minutes from each, and 40 minutes from Brussels, it could be an easy day-trip, or perhaps spend the night. The train station is only a 10-minute walk to the city center.
The Old Town is like a small island, 1.3 kilometers wide, surrounded by canals and the river Nete, renowned for its well-preserved traditional Flemish architecture. Most places of interest in this historic center are only a couple of minutes' walk from each other.
Lier may not be as well-known as some of the larger Belgian cities, but it offers an authentic and captivating experience for those seeking a more intimate and tranquil exploration. Its historical charm, cultural treasures, and warm hospitality will leave a lasting impression on you.
This Grand Market Square is the heart of town, surrounded by stunning guildhouses and the iconic St. Gummarus Church, a magnificent Gothic-style building that dominates the skyline.
One of the most recognizable landmarks in Lier is the Zimmer Tower. Standing tall in the city center, this medieval tower was once part of the city's fortifications. Don't miss the opportunity to climb to the top for panoramic views of the surrounding area.
On the front facade of the Zimmer Tower you can see the fascinating Jubilee Clock, with 13 different dials. At precisely 12 o'clock, the "carousel" appears on the right-hand side of the tower.
Visit the exhibition on time and space in the pavilion, where you will discover the life's work of Louis Zimmer, who was passionate about clocks and astronomy.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is unlike most beguinage, which typically have a central garden courtyard. This housing complex is along 11 narrow streets dating to the 13th century, lined with 162 small homes, mainly from the 17-18th century. Some of them have typical forecourts and gates.
Originally, the houses were inhabited by beguines: celibate, devout women who could lead an independent life under the supervision of a Grand Mistress. They took a vow of chastity and obedience, but not a vow of poverty. Among other things, they made a living from weaving or embroidering lace. They could leave the beguinage freely; only in the evening and on Sundays the gates remained closed. Sister Agnes, the last beguine in Lier, died in 1994.
In 1369, Hendrik Mijs built the slender gothic belfry next to the Cloth Hall, now the Town Hall. The tower is a symbol of freedom and independence. In the Middle Ages the town's deeds and freedoms were kept in the belfries, and the alarm bell was housed there, which was rung in emergencies. The town's arsenal was also housed here.
Since 1971 the belfry tower has housed a small automatic carillon with 23 bells, which plays a tune every 15 minutes. Together with 23 other belfries, the Lier belfry was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
Take a leisurely stroll to the beautiful Zimmerplein, a green square surrounded by cafes and restaurants. It's a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a coffee while people-watching. From there, make your way to Brilschans Park, a lush and scenic area that offers a pleasant escape from the urban bustle.
Take a guided ride through the streets, along the water and in a piece of nature on the city's outskirts. At 14 different stops, the guide tells stories about the city's development, past and present.
This brewery is one of the oldest in Belgium, and is still in operation today. You can tour the brewery and sample some of their delicious beers.
You could take a scenic boat trip along the serene River Nete, which offers a different perspective, allowing you to appreciate Lier's beauty from the water. Enjoy the peaceful ambiance while gliding past scenic landscapes and historic buildings.
The interactive and participative Stadsmuseum presents the stories of Lier and the people of Lier. It connects past to present and presents grand histories with personal stories.
The museum is split into different themes that you can explore individually. Get to know Lier's artists, our traditions and folklore, and a life-size replica of a mammoth skeleton from 1860.
In addition to its historical and cultural attractions, Lier also has a thriving arts scene. There are many art galleries and museums in the city and frequent concerts, festivals, and other cultural events.
