Lisbon
Lisbon is one of Europe's most captivating and underrated capitals, built across seven hills above the wide Tagus River estuary. The city's historic neighborhoods each have their own character: the Alfama district tumbles down to the waterfront in a maze of medieval lanes, the Mouraria quarter hums with the melancholy sound of fado music, and the elegant Baixa and Chiado districts offer grand plazas, bookshops and pavement cafes. The city's iconic yellow trams clatter up steep hills past azulejo-tiled facades, while the hilltop São Jorge Castle offers sweeping views over terracotta rooftops. The Belém district preserves the spectacular Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, commemorating Portugal's Age of Discovery. Lisbon's food scene is exceptional, from fresh seafood at the Mercado da Ribeira to pastéis de nata at the original Pastéis de Belém bakery.
